If two link players land with a bair and a fair at the same time, the link player using bair will have 5 frames of frame advantage assuming that the landing lag is what you said in your post.

The most important concept you need to understand about frame data is that of frame advantage. I'll be talking about Melee because idk about smash4, but i'm sure some of these same concepts will still apply. I might have just answered my question a bunch of times while writing this, and if I have, just tell me.įrame data is super important, I'm a player who likes to lab out options/mixups and shit, here's my take on it. I guess knowing the actual numbers can help you compare them against other characters' moves, but when you have a game like Sm4sh, and there's over 50 unique characters, I can't imagine myself remembering all that frame data. I kind of get it, but I don't know why knowing that Link's b-air has 8 frames of landing lag and his f-air has 13 (or something like that) would be any better than knowing his b-air is faster than his f-air.

I understand that knowing which moves are faster than others and when to use each move, such as using Marth's up-b to get out of combos, but what's the point of remembering all this frame data? Is it just like what I said but further to know which move is better in certain circumstances, like pulling of a hard read and knowing which Smash attack is the fastest but will also kill, and which tilt should I punish with, and then which aerial should I follow up with? People say learning frame data is necessary to be any good at Smash, and M2K even recently made a video detailing how his 13-year-old self would find frame data by pausing the game really quickly after inputting a move.
